Simplyhealth Great North Run 2019 · 8 September 2019 ·

Over 150,000 of us in the UK have MS. It’s unpredictable and different for everyone. But it doesn’t have to be this way. We’re the MS Society. We understand what life’s like with MS. We're here for you through the highs, lows and everything in between. Together, we are strong enough to stop MS.

Story

This September 40 of us will cycle over 300 miles from London to Newcastle over three days. On the fourth day we will be running the Great North Run. We're doing this in aid of the MS Society.

My Great-Grandmother Mabel Moate died of MS at the age of 38. She had 9 children, one of whom died in infancy. This left the eldest sister with the care of her younger siblings. My Great Uncle Albert also developed the disease in his 40s and was severly disabled by it, and my Great Aunt Violet developed it in her 60s. It has had a large effect on my family.

We will be cycling to York on the second day of the ride which is my families home turf.  At age 18 my grandmother cycled 10 miles to York, had half her teeth taken out and then cycled back home. She repeated the process a week later to have her remaining teeth removed. I may need to channel some of my grandmothers Yorkshire grit in order to complete this challenge.
