Story
Thanks for visiting my Just Giving page :)
I am a student speech and language therapist, who along with Amy, want to promote my future profession and raise money for a great cause. We chose the Motor Neurone Disease Association because adult speech and language therapy is commonly associated with stroke patients. We want to highlight the importance of speech and language therapy with progressive neurological conditions such as MND. It is also a cause very close to Amy's heart.
People think speech and language therapy is all about communication but we also work with swallowing difficulties (dysphagia). Modified diets are essential for lots of dysphagia patients to ensure that they can swallow safely and prevent chest infections.
We will be spending a week eating a pureed diet and drinking thickened fluids. This means all our food will be lump free and our drinks will be thickened using a specialist starch based powder to a honey like consistency. Pureed diet is one of a number of possible modified diets a person could be placed on, for more information please refer to the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists website.
We hope to gain insight into what life is like for people living on modified diets and how it affects daily living, from preparing food to socialising. During the week we will also be encouraging others to try modified diets to help raise awareness.
As well as sponsoring us online, you can also donate £1 to The Puree Challenge by texting "PURE59 £1" to 70070 - simple!
We would appreciate any donations and you can follow our progress throughout the week via twitter #thepureechallenge
Thanks!
