Story

Thank you for taking the time to look at my fundraising page.

As some of you are aware, I was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia in June, and my only hope of a cure is a bone marrow transplant. My brother Paul is not a match for me, as such I am now reliant on an unrelated donor being found by the Anthony Nolan Trust, the organisation which maintains the register of potential donors in the UK. So my decision to run the London Marathon in order to raise money for the Trust is very important to me. However, I also like a challenge and thought what could be more fun than running 26 miles whilst fighting a serious blood condition??!!! And I enjoyed running it so much last year that I couldn't pass up the opportunity to have another crack at it..........

Whilst waiting for a bone marrow match to come my way I have decided to do what I can to help the Trust with its life saving work. Over the past 3 months (with the help of some really good friends and family) we have managed to encourage approx 450 new people to sign up with the Anthony Nolan Trust as potential bone marrow donors. So far 3 of those people have been contacted as possible matches for critically ill people, which is a great result (sadly none yet for me, but of course they always save the best til last!!).

However, in spite of this fantastic achievement........blood is simply not enough!!!! To date, it has cost the Anthony Nolan Trust over £31,000 to process the samples taken from the 450 people that have signed up to the register at the sessions that we have organised. My aim is to increase this number of new potential donors to 1,000, which will mean that statistically a life will have been saved (hopefully mine!). If I manage to achieve this target, it will cost the Trust an additional £38,500. As I am relying on the crucial work that the Trust does to help save my life, any financial support that you can offer means a huge amount to me. The Trust does not receive any government funding, so without the generosity of private individuals, it could not work towards saving lives - including mine. If you would also like to consider signing up as a potential donor, information on how to do this is available at http://hertssportsvillage.co.uk/savealife.html. And if you want a laugh, my brother Paul is also running with me on 23rd April, so check out his website at www.justgiving.com/PaulWillbourne. Any help you can give either of us is very gratefully received. Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: The Anthony Nolan Trust will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.
