Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

High on ASD is a project created with the soul purpose of raising money and awareness about autism. The plan is to do this through videos, stories, poems, and whatever else seems appropriate. The idea is to first of all explain the cause, explain what Autistic Spectrum disorders are, how they can affect people, and to widen others knowledge on the subject.

Alongside this, I plan on offering to do certain things when I reach target amounts;

  • £100 - Get Gunged
  • £200 - Extensive Work-out
  • £300 -10 mile walk
  • £400 - You decide
  • £500 - Cutting and donating hair

 Over all, the goal is to change the world.

- My Story -

After being diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome on the 5th of December 2014,  I felt very out of place in my life. Despite this I did the only thing I could do, continue on as always. I got support from a friend's mother whose brother/son also suffers from an autistic spectrum disorder. To help me understand and feel more comfortable with myself, they gave me a bag of books about autism; one of which was a poetry book written by said mother (Gillian Naysmith). 'More Than Words' contained poems about a family's perspective on autism while also portraying the side of the diagnosed member. Although the book is based around a situation about someone with a lower functioning case than mine, I felt like I could really relate to some of the poems. This then lead to me writing some of my own. I never really thought much about them, they were nothing more than an outlet. I did joke with Gillian about the idea of myself realising a poetry book, and I said I would call it "High On ASD". I thought it was cleaver as I have a high functioning ASD.  Then, in early February, I got a Facebook notification which left me in floods of tears...

My friend had tagged my name in the comments of a post along side "I think you should see this. Sorry". I was then left speechless as I read about how a man admired and looked up to had passed away. Although never meeting him, there are no words to describe how much Monty Oum meant to me, and how much he impacted my life...

For the next three days I didn't speak a word. I couldn't bring myself to. The information was taking so long to process through my head. I tried to just focus on day to day school work, but it was tough...

I re-read the post that the company he worked for (Rooster Teeth) Posted on their main page. However, reading it this time was different. The final paragraph read:

 "As for honouring Monty, we will do that in our own way. In lieu of flowers or gifts, we ask that you simply do something creative. Use your imagination to make the world a better place in any way that you can. If you know Monty like we do, then you know he would certainly be doing that if he were able to."

It was in that moment I decided that I would do that. I would do something creative, use my imagination, and make the world a better place. It was then I sat up all night trying to figure out what I could do. Then I decided...

High On ASD would become a reality, for me, and anyone else with a passion for change.
