_______

9 of us will be walking the 47 mile Norfolk Coast Path between Hunstanton and Cromer over the weekend of 20 and to raise money for Help for Heroes.  This is nearly 2 marathons in 2 days which is quite a task, especially during February when there is not much daylight, it is cold, dark and knowing our luck will rain most of the time.

So please dig deep and help us out.

Why are we even contemplating such?- the reason is this:

On , just 6 days after his 28 birthday, Captain Nick Beighton serving with the Royal Engineers, triggered an improvised explosive device (IED) whilst on foot patrol in province, , which left him very seriously injured.

Nick lost both his legs and also broke his pelvis, and but for the heroic actions of a fellow soldier who was on patrol with Nick he would have died at the scene.

Nick returned to the on and spent 10 days in the Critical Care unit at Selly Oak hospital in , during which time he battled infection, a collapsed lung, and a number of further operations.  His progress and improvement since then has been rapid and following a further period on a general ward at Selly Oak he commenced his rehabilitation at in in early December.

During his time at Selly Oak and later at Headley Court Nick has been assisted by the incredible work of Help For Heroes, whose mission is to support where they can wounded members of the armed forces. From little details such as providing clothes and toiletries for injured soldiers who have arrived back in the UK with nothing other than the clothes they're wearing, to more significant projects such as raising money to invest in the facilities at Headley Court where Nick is now learning to walk again.

The job our armed forces do is unparalleled in any other profession. That it is undertaken with such enthusiasm and endeavour makes it all the more astonishing, and often very difficult to comprehend for those of us with more 'normal' jobs. What has always been clear to us however is a solid determination to recognise this effort in whatever way possible, and at the same time to support the excellent work of Help For Heroes.

Whilst no amount of money will ever compensate for the loss of limbs or sustaining other injuries, the money does help make their lives more comfortable and makes living normal lives much easier.  No matter how much you are able to sponsor, every little helps and between us we can make a real difference.

Thanks for taking the time to read this message and thank you in advance for any support you are able to offer. It means a great deal to Nick, his family and friends.

Dave and Liz Beighton, Chris and Deborah Board, Hannah Baker, Helen Oakerbee, James Naish and Holly and Martin Goodwin.
