Hildersham Holy Trinity parish church has been at the heart of the community since the early 13 century. Today the church is considered to be one of the “1000 Best English Churches” and provides a focus for both spiritual and community activities.

There have been many occasions during the history of the church when individuals and groups have ensured that it fulfils its role at the heart of the community. It is our turn now.

Our aim is to raise £190,000 to add basic facilities; to renovate the unique and historically significant Victorian wall paintings; and to upgrade the roof to ensure these are protected for the next generation.

Hildersham Holy Trinity: an 800 year legacy

Believed to have been established by 1150, a gift from William the Conqueror to the de Vere family, and with most of the current building dating back to the early 13 century Hildersham Holy Trinity represents a unique historical asset. The church was substantially improved during the 19 century culminating in 1890 with completion of the chancel murals painted by the leading firm of Clayton and Bell.

Not only are the murals unique but the combination of them and the ancient buildings that surround them make it a historical gift that should be maintained for future generations. According to Simon Jenkins book 1000 Best English Churches, “Hildersham Holy Trinity is a place of considerable historical and architectural interest”.

As with all such historical assets they need to be maintained. The last major renovation was almost 40 years ago, now it is our turn to restore the murals and replace sections of the church roof to ensure the elements can be kept at bay for another generation.

Hildersham Holy Trinity: at the heart of our community

Our church is held in considerable affection by the community who enjoy its history and regard it as a place of spiritual peace and beauty which belongs to us all.

Alongside all of the elements of Christian worship that place our church at the heart of our village it is also the focus for a wide range of community activities.  Be it “Shakespeare in the wood”, our regular “Village Teatime”, or concerts in the church the Trustees are committed to the integration of Church and wider community activities.

In looking to achieve these aims we face a number of challenges perhaps the greatest being the complete lack of basic facilities within the church building (water, drainage, WC).  Not only does a lack of these facilities limit our ability to use the building to full advantage but it also means that a number of people are effectively excluded altogether.

Our plans are straight forward

We aim to make the building accessible to all and capable of being used flexibly for a wide range of purposes we aim to provide a kitchen and WC together with water supply and drainage.  Since the existing space within the building is already well used to achieve this aim we shall need to build an extension to the North of the existing North Door.

The Parochial Church Council has already undertaken significant work to tackle the causes of dampness that has damaged our wall paintings.  We will now complete the necessary restoration work to the paintings not only to preserve their condition but also to enhance their visibility.  In order to keep our treasures in good order we must also undertake major repairs to two of the church’s roofs.

Through this campaign we aim to raise £190,000 to fund these enhancements.  Please help us secure Hildersham Holy Trinity for generations to come.
