Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I am doing a 5k run on the 12th of June to raise money to aid towards Polio Vaccinations in Nigeria.
It can be hard to imagine sometimes, (especially when one lives in developed nations), that some deseases such as Polio still exist. Here in the UK, approximately 99% of the children have been vaccinated. Unfortunately, this is far from the case in other nations such as Nigeria.
In Nigeria, there is a struggle to reach 70% of the population..yes 70%..that's really high!!.Amongst this huge percentage roams misinformation about the disease, which is largely fuelled by village myths about ghosts and spirits.
Christ Ambassadors, on whose behalf I am running is facing extreme challenges to reach this 70% of the population due to misinformation (as mentioned above), about the disease and immunisation; availability of vaccines, as well as problems accessing certain parts of the country.
The debilitating consequences of Polio do not give the affected individual much of a future, or the ability to enjoy and to live a normal life.
Yes, we may all have our opinions about whose responsibility it is to deal with this large scale problem, with some possibly thinking that this is the government's responsibility. Without getting too political, that may well be so. However can we afford to step back and watch as countless destinies are marred and mangled whilst we wait for' those that ought to take responsibility', to do so?
Let's get together and help this nation tear off the veil that is limiting health education and promotion about Polio. Christ Ambassadors Polio Eradication Initiative (CAPEI), now has access to 2 hospitals in the polio endermic regions of the country. In addition CAPEI is aiming to assist healthcare providers, through the production of materials, radio jingles, town criers, and so forth.
We may not individually be able to eradicate Polio. However, my belief is that if we all come together and do our part towards the eradication of Polio, by giving, one day it will be nothing but an unpleasant memory, that need not cripple one's potential dreams, hopes, and destiny.
So as I run, I run not alone, but with each and every person that donates towards this worthy cause. Should I stumble and fall whilst running, I will find the strength to pick myself up and carry on, knowing that each step, is a step closer to the realisation of a hope that yes...Polio can be eradicated.
