100 Miles in a Day · 1 May 2010

We are dedicated to improving the quality of life and chances of survival for young cancer patients aged 13-24. We fund and build specialist units in NHS hospitals and provide dedicated staff, bringing young people together so they can be treated by teenage cancer experts in the best place for them.

Story

On the 1st May in the early morning our intrepid, unfit and overweight (one or two in particular) team will set out from Nevill Holt with the aim of pedalling 100 miles to Burnham Deepdale in North Norfolk. Now you might laugh and say what a breeze that will be, through some of the flattest parts of England. However as the name of the endpoint would hint at, Norfolk is NOT flat (well, not all that flat). Okay, so this is not John O'Groats to Lands End but equally none of us could even pretend to be a Lance Armstrong in the making. We have to try and arrive before 4pm, for us pre sunset will be a challenge and that is assuming we do not get a flat tyre. Just to get us all assembled on the start line, each with a bicycle of any description, will be hard enough. However all we are asking of you is to kindly help us on our way with this endeavour, however small a donation we will be enormously grateul for.

We are raising money for the Teenage Cancer Trust, East Anglia Branch. Every day in the , six teenagers are told they have cancer. This is a rising figure and there are already more young people than children with the disease.  These young people often get a raw deal, receiving hospital treatment in inappropriate facilities catering for children or the elderly. Teenage Cancer Trust focuses on the needs of teenagers and young adults with cancer by providing specialist teenage units in NHS hospitals designed to give teenagers the very best chance of a positive outcome. As well as state-of-the-art facilities to keep patients occupied during long stays in hospital, the units provide an environment where teenagers can meet others in a similar situation.

The charity estimates that, with the units they currently have around the , only half of all teenagers diagnosed with cancer now have access to the dedicated, specialist support they provide. But Teenage Cancer Trust’s aim is to build enough units so that, by 2012, every teenager will be treated on one.  You can help us right now by supporting the local TCT Appeal which is raising funds towards the costs of the first TCT unit for at Addenbrooke's Hospital, .
