Story
With the eyes of the world on Africa, The Hunger Project is running a 'GOALS for Africa' during the World Cup on Facebook, Twitter and Linked In.
Score a goal for Africa by making an investment in our work and please tell someone about The Hunger Project and our work to tackle the Millennium Development Goals at a Community Level.
It was ten years ago that the leaders of 189 nations adopted the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for ending extreme poverty. The deadline for achieving these goals is now less than six years away.
The Hunger Project (THP) takes pride in being a shining example of how to achieve the MDGs in a sustainable and lasting way at the community level. Incredible progress continues to be made in our communities as we work, in full and genuine partnership, with our village partners, empowering them to meet the MDGs where it really counts: at the grassroots level. In the words of Maguette Sow from Senegal, here's the difference working with The Hunger Project has made to her:
"I am 47 years old. My husband is a paraplegic and I am the mother of six children. My life started to change the moment I got a small loan at our epicentre loan program.
I used my first loan of £25 to buy, raise and then sell a sheep. I also began a small business selling vegetables and condiments in a stall. I then took more loans to expand my stall and buy more sheep and a cow.
I now have more money to feed and take care of my family. And I have a new role in my village. I am a member of the loan supervisory committee at Dinguiraye epicentre. Because of the many leadership trainings that I have taken, I speak up for the first time in my life. Now, people invite me to meetings and ask my opinion on community issues. What I say matters".
