At Young Lives vs Cancer, we help families find the strength to face whatever cancer throws at them. But every day 12 more children and young people hear the devastating news they have cancer. We’ll face it all together – but we can’t do it without you. Visit www.younglivesvscancer.org.uk

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

After just short of 7 months of cycling, 2.79 million heart beats, 3.5 million pedal strokes, and 87,794 metres of vertical ascent and descent, on Sun 26th September, at 3:14pm, the GPS distance alarm went off to indicate I had cycled 5,000 miles or 8,000,000 metres.

When it hurt, when I was tired, when it snowed, when it rained, when a gale blew, when the miles seemed too much; I thought of cancer sufferers and realised my discomfort was nothing. I knew I just had to get on with it, and the miles would take care of themselves.

As a reminder I started cycling on 1st March 2010, in Winter, and have cycled through all four seasons,  to finish in early Autumn.  Apart from a two week holiday in July, I have been undertaking this challenge every week since the start of March. After dedicating almost 7 months of my time to the challenge for Clic Sargent; I am looking forward to life returning to normal.

I sit here and only now realise the size of the challenge I undertook and saw through to the finish. It is incredibly satisfying to know I have done this, and raised so much money to help support those with cancer. Thank you to all of those who have supported or joined me on sections of my challenges. I hope you are inspired by what I have done and hope you will come up with your own “big” challenges; to help Tesco’s chosen charity of the year.

Tesco staff across the country are supporting local children with cancer by raising money for the children’s cancer charity CLIC Sargent, Tesco Charity of the Year 2010.

I think this is a great way to get fitter and raise money for CLIC Sargent and children with cancer.  I was inspired to hear about the work the charity does and this is a way for me to help children with cancer spend as much time at home as possible whilst they are undergoing treatment.  One of my nieces was diagnosed with Leukaemia a little over 15 months ago.  Fortunately, following chemotherapy, she has now been given the all clear. More children and their families than you think are affected by cancer and this is my little way of helping.

I'm cycling outdoors day in, day out to reach 5000 miles.  I'll need to expend around 300,000 calories, ascend and descend 99  vertical kilometers, and my heart will beat approximately 3.65 million times.

Those days when it rains (or snows) and the wind howls be hard.  Your sponsorship will motivate me on those days :)
