WSPA Borneo Jungle Trek 2011 · 3 November 2011

We end the needless suffering of animals. We influence decision makers to put animals on the global agenda. We help the world see how important animals are to all of us. We inspire people to change animals’ lives for the better. We move the world to protect animals.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page ;-)

We're off to Indonesia on 3rd November to go trekking through the rainforests of Borneo to help WSPA save the orangutans. There are only 30,000 orangutans left in Borneo's vanishing rainforests. Illegal logging and fires set to clear the land for palm oil production are destroying the rainforest habitat of the tree-dwelling orangutan.

Homeless, the orangutans migrate in search of food. Unfortunately, if they are seen near palm oil crops, they will be beaten or shot by plantation workers. The reception at villages is equally dangerous.

Fearing their crops will be eaten, local people kill wandering adult orangutans. Their young, frequently maimed in the attacks, are sold into the cruelty of the international pet trade.

The BOS Foundation, a WSPA member society, rescues orphaned and injured orangutans and gives them a new life in a purpose-built sanctuary, where they can thrive. For the orphaned youngsters, BOS staff take over the role that their mothers would have played and teach them how to climb and to forage for food. Those orangutans that are mentally and physically ready for independence are transferred to nearby islands where they can take important steps towards being rehabilitated to the wild whilst still receiving some support, in the form of additional food, from BOS staff.

Please help us save this endangered species. We will be forever grateful to you. Please dig deep and donate now.

Thank you, Iain and Angi.
