Cycling The Alps for Cotswold Care Hospice
Iain Bailey, owner of the The Ormond Hotel in Tetbury is cycling an alpine stage of the Tour De France next week to raise money for Cotswold Care Hospice in memory of Steve Ford who died of a brain tumour in January 2011.
Iain has been training for almost a year, cycling up to 100 miles per week to get into top form ready to take on the challenge of the mighty Galibier and Alpe D'Huez mountains. The whole challenge has to be completed within 10 hours.
"Cycling is a great way to get fit and climbing these mountains will be really tough, but hopefully all the long hours in the saddle will be worth it. I knew that Steve loved cycling and this is a perfect way to honour his memory" commented Iain.
When Steve was just 18, he cycled from Lands End to John O'Groats in aid of cancer research. The following year he and his future wife, Jane, cycled from Turkey back to England and took in the same alpine mountains on the way.
"Steve would have been so thrilled that Iain was cycling in his memory and raising money for such a good cause. Alpe D'Huez is a hard climb and we did it with all of our camping gear when we were teenagers!" says Jane. "The people at Cotswold Care Hospice were wonderful. They not only looked after Steve at home with such care and dignity, but also myself and our two children, Charlotte and Alice during his last harrowing week. Without the Hospice, Steve would not have been able to be at home in his final hours. We will always be so grateful to the wonderful nurses that took such great care of us" added Jane.
