Story

15 of us will be setting off from Lands End on 15th June to cycle 1,000 miles to the other end of the country in 13 days straight.

It seemed like a really good idea 12 months ago when I agreed to go but having invested a small fortune in a new bike and an unbelievable amount of cycling gear and started to do some training I now realise that it is more of an undertaking than I had realised!  We will be covering the 1,000 miles (not allowing for navigational errors along the way!) in 13 days - over 75 miles a day - and I now know that a nice, comfortable day's ride is about 40 miles.......

We are going the 'uphill' way because I am told the prevailing winds are from the south.  If we manage to get those tail winds and some decent sunshine it might even prove to be quite fun, though some of the days look to be pretty gruelling in terms not only of distance to cover but height to climb; Day 2 might only be 65 miles but starting on the south coast and ending up at the top of Dartmoor means  over 5,000 ft of climb.

Surrey Clubs for Young People was founded in 1947, covers the whole county of Surrey and the four London Boroughs of Kingston, Merton, Sutton and Croydon and is the largest voluntary sector, non-uniformed deliverer of youth work in Surrey.  We have a long history of engaging with disadvantaged and vulnerable young people at risk of social exclusion, anti-social behaviour and ultimately involvement in the justice system.  9% of young people in Surrey are officially living in poverty but many in the most deprived areas live within 1 mile of a youth club.

Our role is to support local youth clubs and volunteer groups with training and guidance for youth club leaders and management committees - but also in practical hands-on support to ensure that the doors stay open and the lights are on.  Where there is a need we launch new youth clubs and then engage the local community to take it on and manage it for the future of their young people.

Our fundraising finances volunteers, equipment and exciting activities.  Ensuring young people have a safe place to go, can make friends, find mentors and role models, build their confidence and offer them positive choices, helping them on the path to a flourishing adulthood.

We are completely independently funded and rely on support from people like you.  Thank you.
