Sunday 13th October will see me and the two Toms pounding the streets of Oxford city for a gruelling 13.1 miles. We have been training hard and are ready to go, now we just need to ask for you help to reach our fundraising target.

“What is Adoption UK?” I hear you ask. Adoption UK is a charity which provides vital support to adoptive families.

 

“But why do adoptive families need support?” Well, we all know how important child protection is but have you ever wondered what happens to children who cannot safely live with their birth parents, or members of their birth families? 

Many of these children are adopted into loving adoptive families - in fact, the majority of UK adoptions today involve these children. But this isn’t the end of the story. 

All adopted children have suffered the loss of being separated from their birth families. The reality is that many have also sadly experienced neglect and/or abuse in those families.

Although rewarding too, bringing up a child adopted from care can be very challenging. The effects of neglect and abuse suffered by children before coming into care can last well into adulthood. For adoptions to succeed, many adopted children require therapeutic parenting and specialist services and adoptive parents require support and information.

Adoption UK provides this vital support for all adoptive families in the UK and helps adoptions succeed. The charity also raises awareness of adoption issues and successfully campaigns for improvements to adoption laws. This is what makes Adoption UK unique and deserving of support.
