Story
I have walked a grueling 4 day 40 mile trek in the Atlas Mountain Range peaking at Jbel Toubkal (4167 meteres) which is 4 times higher than Snowdon and the second highest mountain in the whole of Africa. I am doing this in aid of the Walton Centre as my good friend Gethyn Owen's father Iolo 'Bonc' was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease.
Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a rare condition caused by the breakdown of the nerve cells in the brain that control the muscles. Unfortunately there is currently no cure, and life expectancy will be affected depending on how symptoms progress. However, research is underway to understand the causes, and develop a cure. Iolo has been a freequent visitor to the Walton Centre.
The Walton Centre is unique to the NHS in that it is the only specialist Neurosciences Trust in the UK. Based in Liverpool, the catchment population is over 3.5 million and is drawn from Merseyside Cheshire, part of Lancashire and Greater Manchester, The Isle of Man and North Wales. However, with an international reputation in some areas of expertise, referrals are accepted on the basis of clinical need from any geographical area.
The Walton Centre provide a comprehensive range of services: neurology, neurosurgery, pain management, rehabilitation and specialist diagnostic service. The Walton Centre have set up a fund to help further the activities of the Walton Centre and allows improvements in areas such as neurological research (especially in MND), staff training and patient welfare.
I thank you for supporting this very worthy cause and every penny donated will go a long way to supporting the development of eventualy finding a cure to this horrible disease.
