Independent on Sunday appeal
Change a life this Christmas
Help Refuge support thousands of women and children escaping domestic violence over the festive period
The Independent on Sunday has chosen Refuge for the Christmas appeal 2012. With your support, Refuge can change lives and save lives this Christmas.
How your donation could help
- £10 can pay for an hour-long activity session for a group of children living in a refuge
- £30 can enable an independent domestic violence advocate to work with a woman to create a plan to keep her safe
- £100 can fund a local support group session for ten women who have experienced domestic violence
- £350 could pay for a training workshop for 20 women, helping them to enter employment and regain their independence
- £500 could help pay for 3 women and their children to access a place of safety in a refuge, giving them the time and space to start rebuilding their lives
- £2,500 could help support specialist domestic violence services for approximately 5 women and their children from minority ethnic groups. Women and children from minority ethnic groups often face a different set of pressures and can find it difficult to access mainstream services
About Refuge
Refuge opened the world’s first refuge in Chiswick, West London, in 1971. Since then, we’ve grown to become the country’s largest provider of specialist domestic violence services. On any given day we support 2,000 women and children.
Our services
There is no single package of services to meet those needs – no ‘one size fits all’ solution. Refuge offers a range of services which gives women and children access to professional support whatever their situation.
- Refuge provides safe, emergency accommodation through our national network of refuges
- We offer community based outreach services for women still living with domestic violence
- Our team of independent domestic violence advocates (IDVAs) support women at the highest risk of serious harm or injury
- We provide culturally specific services for minority ethnic women who face additional barriers escaping domestic violence
- Child support workers based in our refuges provide one-to-one and group support for children
- Refuge runs the National Domestic Violence Helpline in partnership with Women’s Aid
- At the Gaia Centre, a pioneering new service in Lambeth, Refuge works to address all forms of gender violence
- Refuge also runs award winning campaigns to raise public awareness of the issue and lobbies for better provision for women and children experiencing domestic violence
Please give generously

Refuge has led the campaign against domestic violence for over forty years. But to keep our doors open in 2013, we need your help.
Please give as much as you can to the Independent on Sunday appeal.
You can also donate by sending a cheque or postal order to Refuge, International House, 1 St Katharine’s Way, London, E1W 1UN, or by calling 020 7395 7710.
You can support Refuge’s life-changing, life-saving work for many Christmases to come by setting up a regular gift.
On behalf of all the women and children Refuge is supporting this Christmas – thank you

No Christmas cards this year, these people need the money more than my friends and family need another card. Be good to each other in 2013.
