Story

On the 22nd January 2012, eight servicemen currently based at Mt. Alice in the Falkland Islands will complete the inaugural "Indy 361" challenge.

The servicemen are taking on this challenge to raise money for a very worthy charity and, as a mark of respect for their soon to depart colleague, Gurkha; Cpl Indra Limbu.

Fascinated by the story of how "Indy" was selected for service as a Gurkha in the British Army and such is the impression that his professionalism and personality has left on his colleagues, we have decided to recreate the toughest element of the Gurkha selection process: the Doko race.

The Doko race is the culmination of an intense three week selection course which starts with around 28,000 Nepalese male applicants and ends with only 230 successful recruits, Indy by the way finished first! The recruits then complete a nine-month long training course at Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire before graduating.

The race requires each man to complete a 4km race up a near vertical hill carrying 35Kg, the weight borne by the traditional Nepalese carrying a strap across the forehead in a Doko; a woven bamboo basket.

The "Indy 361" will require each of the eight servicemen based at Mt. Alice to carry his own "d.i.y. Doko" and climb the 1185ft (361 metres) mountain, over a 4.5 mile track.

Having read this and in light of the news that the Gurkhas are set to bear the brunt of 5,000 armed forces job losses being unveiled this week, please donate to our chosen charity and support us in completing this challenge.
