Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Jayden was born with a congenital heart defect which was later diagnosed as Transposition of the Great Arteries and VSD.

At less than 12 hours old Jayden was transferred to Southampton Childrens Hospital as they were considered the best hospital to deal with Jayden's heart condition. Jayden was transported in an intensive care ambulance in a specially designed 'pod' to transfer children in a critical condition. Within a few hours we were at Southampton and Jayden was settled into Paediatric Intensive Care.

At two days old Jayden had his first operation a Septostomy to create a hole in the top half of his heart as they thought he didnt have one naturally. It turned out when they did go in through a catheter to do this he already had one it was just covered by a flap of skin! After this operation he went to Ocean Ward for two weeks to await his next operation, the biggest.

His second operation was at 2 weeks old this was the big operation to switch the artery's and close the hole in the bottom two chambers of his heart. This operation took over 6 hours and was one of the longest days of our lives. We had every faith in the surgeon as Marcus Hall was one of the best in Southampton and world reknown. The operation was a success and following this he went back to PICU on a ventilator to recover from the surgery.

He stayed in PICU for 3 days, he had some scary blips but he was strong and pulled through. Two days post surgery he was taken off the ventilator, gradually weaned off his medicine and was back on Ocean Ward after 3 days. We stayed on Ocean Ward for a further two weeks, we learned how to do his feeds and medicine by nasogastric tube.

After 4 weeks being in Southampton we eventually came home to Plymouth. We carried on his care, had a community nurse visit weekly and now have follow up hospital appointments. He has now been discharged from homecare and after our first hospital visit in January he was taken off his heart medicine.

We are very grateful to all the team at PICU and Ocean Ward in Southampton Hospital for saving our son's life. They do an amazing job and although the PICU unit at first felt daunting with all the machines, beeping and poorly babies we soon felt at ease there and all the nurses were really friendly to us and explained everything that was happening. We just wanted to say a huge THANK YOU!!
