Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
All in just one day we will be doing a 25 mile circular challenge walk, the Three Peaks of Yorkshire starts and finishes at Horton-in-Ribblesdale, visiting the three highest peaks in Yorkshire - Pen-y-ghent (691m), Whernside (728m), and Ingleborough (723m) - in that order.
What does JDRF mean to us?
In 2003 our friend’s son Ellis was diagnosed with diabetes when he was just 14 months old. It all happened very quickly, Ellis became poorly in a matter of days, drinking lots and lacking any energy, despite trips to the doctors it was not until his parents rushed him to A and E that he was diagnosed. Ellis was in DKA ( a life threatening complication due to lack of insulin) . He was just 1 hour away from slipping into a diabetic coma, that night they nearly lost him.
With the hard work and support of the hospital staff, Ellis was able to leave hospital a week later with his parents to embark on a world that was not invited or welcome but is an absolute necessity for Ellis to survive.
The hardest part of diabetes is trying to keep levels steady, one day is rarely the same as the next, so many things can affect blood glucose levels food, insulin, exercise, stress, hormones, illness, excitement and even the weather all play a part.
Ellis is now on an insulin pump which he wears 24 hours a day, he has to have a cannula changed every 2 days and check his blood glucose with a finger prick reading up to 10 times a day. Everything he eats is closely monitored , weighed and carbohydrate counted.
Ellis copes amazingly well and we are all really proud of him.
Insulin is not a cure, it is life support.
JDRF are so important in finding a cure for type 1 diabetes. They are at the forefront for finding this. They need donations to make this possible.
Help find a cure
Thank-you for your support, we very much appreciate it.
