The Objects of CIVA are “to advance any purpose which is recognised as being exclusively charitable under the laws of every part of the United Kingdom”. CIVA specialises in taking good ideas and turning them into successful and sustainable programmes. The main thrust of our work at the present time is in the following areas: • The promotion of social entrepreneurship and support of social entrepreneurs. • Encouraging the participation of young people in issues that affect them as young people and in wider society. • Enabling poor communities to address issues and problems in their lives. • Addressing the needs of families and their health and wellbeing, especially young families and early years children, • Addressing the issues of environmental sustainability and climate change. • The advancement of mathematics. • Experimenting with and investigating new forms of sustainable finance in support of these objectives.

Story

Hi everyone

Some people run for charity, while others cycle.  I for some reason have decided that I will throw myself off a building in the name of charity!  Thankfully (and hopefully), I will have a rope attached to me at the time.  All in the name of a most worthy new venture -- I hope you will agree and join me in providing any financial and moral support you can.  PS: more info below...

Thanks a bunch!!

Jenny

I’m raising sponsorship for a exciting new educational project called Hackney Pirates by taking part in a 60 person pirate-themed abseil off a 4-story building on the 30th October 2010.

The Hackney Pirates is an innovative education project aimed at supplementing the school system. The project works to harness the skills of local volunteers to help develop core literacy skills and creative ability in young people in Dalston, by giving young people one to one attention in an unconventional learning environment. The Hackney Pirates ran a successful pilot over the summer and is now ready to develop a permanent centre.

The money raised through this sponsored abseil will give the project the financial boost they need to develop a sustainable business plan and secure a lease for a building that they can turn into an after-school drop-in centre for the young people of Dalston.. The funds raised from this event will help make the Hackney Pirates become a permanent resource for young people in the Dalston area. Please help out generously!

All funds will be transferred to the Centre for Innovation in Voluntary Action (CIVA), a UK registered charity (Charity Number 1122095), who are kindly hosting this Just Giving page for the Hackney Pirates. CIVA will then transfer all funds raised to the Hackney Pirates.
