Young Joe’s cycle challenge in memory of Great-Grandfathers
Joe Bolton aged just 10 from Wombourne is facing a massive challenge when he will cycle from Wombourne to Barmouth in Wales with his dad Garry over the weekend of the 3 to 5 June, raising funds for Mary Stevens Hospice.
Joe’s paternal great-Grandad, Percy Stallard was a well known road cyclist and ran the bicycle shop in Broad Street Wolverhampton for over 60 years. He participated in the World Road Racing Championship during the mid 1930’s coming 6 in 1934 at Leipzig in Germany. Percy brought cycle road racing to Britain and in 1942 organised a mass-start race from Llangollen to Wolverhampton, on June 7.
Sadly, Joe’s maternal great-Grandad, Ernest Trevis passed away at Mary Stevens Hospice at the end of last year and the family have been so appreciative of his care that they have since organised several fundraising events to raise funds for the Hospice.
Joe’s love of cycling gave him a special reason to pay tribute to both his great-Grandfathers.
Mum, Shelley Lowe said, “Life is often described as a gift. However, what greater gift can you give to someone than to die with dignity and be surrounded by love. Mary Stevens Hospice gave my Grandad that gift.”
Janet Jones, Head of Fundraising added, “Shelley and the family of Ernest Trevis continue to support the Hospice in a variety of ways for which we are extremely grateful, particularly in these challenging economic times. We wish Joe and his Dad a safe journey on their epic challenge”.
