On 29th January, 2011 my very brave (mad) husband John will undertake an expedition to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. He has informed me that this is a feat which is very close to his heart, but personally I think it is just an excuse to have 10 days away from me!
He has spent many months in strict training for this expedition, which has included taking up a paper round at the grand old age of 55 to increase his stamina, I actually find it very hard to believe that delivering the Wirral News using his mums shopping trolley can be classed as an acceptable form of body conditioning. I'm sure anyone that knows John personally will aready be aware of how important body conditioning is to him!
This is the lighter side of Johnny Kirkhams great adventure......
On a serious note, he is undertaking this mammoth goal in memory of my Mum & Dad, Sheila RADESTOCK and Tony DAWSON, who both very sadly lost their personal battles with cancer in February 2006 and August 2009. We were fortunate to be living in an area which has one of the best cancer care facilities in the Country, CLATTERBRIDGE CENTRE for Oncology on the Wirral. Their treatment, care, support and compassion was second to none.
The sad outcome for Mum & Dad was not a reflection in anyway on the Centre, on both occasions it was just a tragic sequence of events that did not allow us the happy ending that we had wished for.
It is our wish now to be able show our eternal gratitude to the Centre and Staff by helping in some small way with their funding. There are so many who still need to have that hope, a hope for a happy, healthy future that CLATTERBRIDGE can provide.
John has asked me to submit a small quote from him in the belief that it will help you to dig deep for such a worthy cause...
"I KNOW THAT IN THESE DIFFICULT TIMES ASKING FOR FINANCIAL SUPPORT MAY CAUSE YOU HARDSHIP.....BUT COULD I ASK YOU TO SPARE A THOUGHT FOR THE HARDSHIP THAT I WILL ENDURE.......10 DAYS WITHOUT PORK PIES............SURELY THAT ALONE IS WORTHY OF A COUPLE OF QUID"

Thank you so much to all who donate to this very, very worthy cause, and as my Mum used to say "Smile, open your eyes, love and go on"....
Hugs
Gina xx
***UPDATE*** On 5th February, 2011 at 4 a.m. our time John achieved his Most Excellent Adventure and stood at 19,340ft to watch the sun rise over Kilimanjaro. His text to me simply said "JOB DONE".....................
