We’re more determined than ever to make sure new generations, especially young people from disadvantaged groups, can discover the power of DofE.

Story

What's all this then?

I've chosen to run the Ealing Half Marathon in order to raise money for the Duke of Edinburgh's Award.

But why would I want to raise money for middle-class white kids to go yomping in the Chilterns?

You may be surprised to learn that the DofE works with young people from a wide variety of cultural and social backgrounds, including those in schools and youth groups but also those in housing associations, prisons and homeless shelters. In fact, many of our most positive outcomes are with those young people who are disadvantaged, troubled or otherwise 'at risk'.

The money I raise will go towards helping those with financial barriers to participation to engage with the DofE.

Okay, what are the benefits of doing the DofE?

Top UK employers view a DofE Award as the most valuable addition to a CV after formal qualifications. Participation also encourages young people to learn leadership skills, work as a team and think outside the box. They are expected to set their own targets and learn how to achieve them. DofE Awards can't be 'failed' - they're about recognising commitment and dedication to a goal. By doing a DofE Award, young people learn that they have the ability to achieve the targets they set themselves. Speaking from experience, I know that this is incredibly empowering and hugely confidence-building. It's also a great way to make friends and is a lot of fun!

It's for this reason that I strongly believe that there should be as few barriers as possible to participation to every young person. By sponsoring me to run this half marathon, you'll be helping me to remove some of those barriers.
