My story

Tom was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in August 2006 aged 16 after complaining of pain in his shoulder.  A keen rugby enthusiast who played for his beloved Loughborough RFC from the age of 7 years old until diagnosis.  Tom had a positive outlook on life despite many months of chemotherapy. He endured a forequarter amputation losing his right arm, shoulder joint, collar bone and shoulder blade.  He was awarded the Wellchild award in his age group in 2007 and also received the prestigious Diana award. Tom passed away in February 2008.....18 years old.

There has been no progress in 20 years in the treatment of Bone Cancer (McNally British Journal of Cancer January 2009) which contrasts with the terrific progress nearly doubling survival rates in the three major cancers. That is why the BCRT set up a few years ago by bereaved parents and backed by eminent experts, is focussed on raising funds for research to ensure the children and young people diagnosed tomorrow have a better chance. The opportunity for improvement is clear.

It is our wish as a family to raise awareness and much needed funds for the Bone Cancer Research Trust.  90% of all new cases of Primary Bone Cancer (PBC) will develop in teenagers. The Bone Cancer Research Trust is devoted to promoting research into the causes and treatment of PBC, particularly Osteosarcoma & Ewing's Sarcoma and to improving outcomes for patients.  We also want them to have the funds in order to continue to provide  information and support for patients and families.

On Saturday 15th May 2010 family and friends will be cycling from Tom Walkers Memorial statue at Burleigh Community College, Loughborough to the Clock Tower in Skegness, a distance of approximately 90 miles.

All donations will be gratefully received, thank you.
