The Rainforest Foundation, UK - YogaThon · 30 October 2010 ·

The Rainforest Foundation UK aims to protect tropical rainforests by working with those who know the forest best – indigenous peoples and traditional forest dwellers. By supporting them, we're taking a major step forward in the battle to combat climate change.

Story

On 30th October 2010 at 12 noon, 300 people will gather together to complete 108 Sun Salutations for Charity. And we will be two of them!

We need to raise a minimum sponsorship of £108 each!

When signing up we had to choose one charity out of the four that YogaThon had designated. After reading a poignant quote “With the rising threat of Global Warming, the illusion of separateness is dissolving around the world.” we chose The Rainforest Foundation UK

Focusing on the Breath is fundamental to the practice of Yoga, and as the Rainforests are the lungs of the earth we feel this charity is even more relevant.

Why 108? Well, the number 108 carries spiritual significance throughout a wide swathe of cultures:

108 is the number of "Upanishads" comprising Indian philosophy's "Vedic texts".

108 is the number of names for Shiva (a really important Hindu god).

108 is the number of names for Buddha.

108 is the Chinese number representing "man".

108 is the number of beads on a Catholic rosary.

108 is the number of beads on a Tibetan "mala" (prayer beads, analagous to a rosary).

108 is twice the number "54", which is the number of sounds in Sanskrit (sacred Indian langauge).

108 is six times the number "18", which is a Jewish good luck number.

108 is twelve times the number 9, which is the number of vinyasas (movements linked to breath) in a Sun Salutation.

Take a look at our Facebook page 108 for the Rainforest! to follow our progress in practicing the Sun Salutations daily and attempting to raise the sponsorship money!

We really appreciate your donations and so does Mother Earth :-)

Namaste,

Jacquie & Michael xx
