Story

This is my Brother Joel and this is our story of our time on Trevor Mann.

When my mum was pregnant with Joel she had some complications and got taken into Royal Sussex in Brighton. The doctors told my mum that she had gone into labour she was only 30 weeks pregnant she was given lots of medication to stop the labour and steriod injections for the baby to help mature his lungs.

Mum was kept in hospital for a week then the doctors decided she could go home on bed rest. Mum had a check up every week just to make sure everything was okay.

At 34 weeks the doctors were not happy with the lack of oxygen that Joel was gettting and how unactive he was so they decided to deliver him.

Joel was born on the 22 February 2005 weighing a very healthy 6lb 10oz all seemed to be well. Mum was quite poorly after having joel and had to have a blood transfusion. When Joel was around 3 hours old he took a turn for the worse and started to struggle to breathe. The midwife took Joel off my dad and stared to work on him at which point a doctor came and took over and they rushed him onto the Trevor Mann intensive care ward.

Mum didnt know any of this was happening as she was asleep. When mum woke up neither my dad or Joel were there a doctor came down and spoke to my mum and told her what had happened and that the next 48 hours were crictical.

Dad came and took mum onto the Trevor Mann to see Joel he was covered in tubes and wires and was connected to CPAP to help him breathe as he had Respiratory Distress Syndrome this means his lungs hadn't developed properly. He was given antibiotics and had a feeding tube inserted he had many other tests a scan on his brain to check for any bleeding. This was a very traumatic time for our family.

Thanks to the amazing Doctors and Nurses Joel was home 4 weeks later. These Baby units are so precious and need so much money to help these babies and get them home to their families.

Trevor Mann has around 400 babies per year admitted some of these babies may only be on the unit a day but some stay for up to 6 months. It costs £60,000 for one intensive care cot and costs £120,000 a year to staff one cot with highly trained staff.

At the minute the unit has 27 cots 9 of which are for Intensive care this is one of the cots Joel started in 8 cots for High Dependency and the remaining 10 for Special Care.

I have set my target for a £1000 but would love to raise more if i can as the Trevor Mann staff saved my brothers life.

SATURDAY 30TH MAY 2011

This was Jades first training session in the sea she found it hard at first and had to get out as it was so cold and she started to panic. After a while Jade tried again this time the girl did good and was in the water for around 30 minutes she was off and there was no stopping her all thanks to her coach Fiona. Will update again in a few days after the next training session .

Come on people dig deep Jade is working really hard xx

SATURDAY 7TH MAY

What a difference a week makes Jade had so much confidence out in the water she even found a football out there and swam all the way back with it lol. Our plan for next week is a swim around the pier bearing in mind that this will only be her third training session i think this will be a massive acheivement.

Update: Jade is doing so well we are now only £110 off our next target which is £1500. Jade has been in the Uclfield news, The Argus and she will be in the Sussex Express soon we are also meeting the Kent & Sussex courier on Thursday for photos and interview.

Jade is loving swimming in the sea and doesnt want to give it up so will continue swimming and train for her next goal which by the sounds of it will be a Chanel swim.
