After completing the full marathon in under 5 hours I can honestly say it was by far the most physically and mentally challenging thing I have accomplished. At 5700 feet, over 30 degree C temperatures, rough terrain and what seemed like endless hills it's no surprise it's one of the toughest marathons in the world. Having spent the days in the lead up to the marathon visiting Tusk Trust projects, it was an easy decision to make taking the second lap of the course to run the full 42km, instead of the half marathon as intended when leaving for Kenya.

We had the opportunity to visit a project initiated in 2007, Kanyunga primary school where we have built classrooms, sanitation facilities and transformed a waste patch into a garden where they can grow their own vegetables.This was very successful in making the school self-sufficient as well as teaching skills to the children they can take home and teach their parents. The kitchen allows for the children to be fed three times a day and I believe this to be the reason some children walk up to 20km to get to school for breakfast at 7am, some without shoes on their feet. We then visited another school we are looking to fund, and this is the reason I am determined to raise as much money as possible for the Trust. With 2 lavatories for over 200 children, a few dark shacks filled with children and a blackboard it's far from a school yet the children were remarkable. They were well behaved, full of energy and enthusiasm. They sang and danced for us and were inspiring. The money raised will go to transforming this place into a school, where the children and teachers are given the facilities to enable them to achieve, they certainly have the drive already.
