Story
Alot of you will know that recently year i lost my Nan. This was a hard time for me. I lived with her for most of my life, to me she wasn't just my Nan, she was a second mum as well as my best friend.
Recently, i ve been training for the Paris marathon with a couple of mates. I wanted to find something to do to raise money in memory of my Nan and this seems as good as any. She’d think i was crazy doing this and probably would stop me .
Throughout my life i have very fond memories of her. However, during the last 4 months of my Nan’s illness, she deteriorated massively. She was a shadow of her former self. She became weak, frail, and had given up on life, No longer was she the fun loving independent women who helped raise me. She was a different person both physically and mentally. My Nan being like this broke my heart, i knew it wasn’t the real her. I was really upset because i wanted my final memories to be happy ones of her.
On the final day and night of her life, a Marie Curie nurse called Christine came over to my house to help look after my Nan. Marie Curie provides free nursing care to cancer patients and those with other terminal illnesses in their own homes. I can honestly say Christine was one of the loveliest ladies i have ever met. She doesn’t know it but what she did for us that night was amazing.
Because of Christine, my Nan spent her final hours of her life peacefully in her bedroom surrounded by her family who truly loved her instead of being stuck in a hospital.
Christine made her comfortable and eased her pain. My Nan passed away in her sleep painlessly and this is down to Christine. She even brought my Nan’s warm loving smile back which I hadn’t seen in months. I still have that image in my head today.
It also allowed me to sit with my Nan during her final hours and thank her for everything she did for me and how I will never forget her.
Marie Curie is the reason I can treasure the final memories of my Nan for the rest of my life.
Anyways, please dig deep and donate, anything will be appreciated but remember to save some money to buy me a drink next time I’m out. I think I will need some inspiration during the last few miles of the marathon. Knowing I am I’m running for a good cause in memory of my Nan will definitely help get me through to the finishing line. Thanks, Laf
