'Killer Whales' HRFW Channel Swim 2013 · 26 September 2013

Heart disease is the principal cause of death in both men and women living in Wales, where its incidence is one of the highest in the world. HRFW is a registered charity (no.509427) and is completely independent of hospital trusts, health authorities and universities.

Story

·         I, Dr James Wrench and seven other Welsh Doctors who are all Professors of Medicine and Cardiology (Heart Disease) are swimming the English Channel, there and back on 26th September 2013.

We are swimming to raise the profile and sponsorship for Heart Disease Research in Wales, for the only Heart Charity in Wales, which is the HRFW.

The team is called the 'Killer Whales' as it is a pun on the fact that heart disease is the number one killer in Wales - & we are all men in between the ages of 40 and 60 and are in the highest risk group of people who have hidden or 'silent' heart disease.

It is in this age group where the greatest difference to mortality / death rates can be made by detecting early signs of heart disease before they suddenly kill young men & women!

In Wales the death rate from heart disease is 15% higher than in England and the research project that HRFW is leading is going to answer why this difference is occurring and how we can not only match the figures in England but do better! - The HRFW is a charity (unlike most other charities) with absolutely  no overheads, no salaried staff, no hidden costs and has only 'true' volunteers working for it - it is run purely voluntarily by doctors and surgeons in Wales & every single penny given goes to research and directly saving lives in Wales.

As for the safety & health of the Team we are all undergoing ongoing rigorous tests by Professor Bailey from the University of South Wales, one of the top Sports (Neurovascular) Scientists in the world.
