Story

My daughter Sophie and I ran the Chevron City to Surf for Active on the 28th August 2016.

My husband Adam was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease at 18.
Crohn’s Disease is a condition that causes inflammation of the digestive system. Current treatment includes immunosuppressants, steroids and surgery to remove intestine that has been strictured by the disease. Adam has already had several surgeries to remove a significant part of his intestine.

We need a cure for Crohn's.

THE MAP VACCINE and the new MAP TEST

Professor John Hermon-Taylor (King’s College London) is an expert in Crohn’s Disease who has been researching its cause for over thirty years. He strongly believes that Crohn’s Disease is caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) – a distant cousin of Tuberculosis.

Professor Hermon-Taylor has invented a vaccine against MAP which he believes holds the best hope of a cure for Crohn’s that there has ever been. This vaccine is currently sitting in a freezer in a research institute, awaiting the funding to take it from the lab to the clinic.

In order to run clinical trials for the vaccine, an essential MAP TEST has been developed and is in the early stages of clinical trial. To complete the full trial of this MAP test a further £227,000 is required on top of £243,000 already raised for research and development so far.

Adam has recently started receiving anti-MAP antibiotic therapy from Prof Thomas Borody in Sydney and we're hopeful this will delay further surgery.

We need this vaccine.

MY RUNNING CAREER(?!)

The earliest part of my running career involved finding short cuts on cross country routes at school and coming up with the best excuses to get out of it altogether. This time I promise to run the whole thing. I started running after Adam's latest surgery. I felt that I needed to be the healthiest I could be for my family. A friend talked me into running the Perth City to Surf 12km and I've been addicted ever since.

for Adam, Sophie, Ben
Niina and all my Crohn's affected friends x
