My name is Jane Innes and this year I am taking part in a fantastic event - I never thought I would see the day when my own name would be written in a sentence along with the words Great North Run!

I wish I could say that I took to running like a duck to water, but that hasn’t been the case as anyone who has seen me out training would testify - breathing like asthmatic pit pony springs to mind!  It has been hard but the more I have persevered the more I have improved.  I am really looking forward to the experience on September 20th and will do my best to complete the 13.1 miles. 

I really didn't know which charity to run for as there are so many worthy causes but after much thought, I have chosen the Ellen MacArthur Trust.  This charity takes young people between the ages of 8 and 18 sailing to help them regain their confidence, on their way to recovery from cancer, leukaemia and other serious illness.

Being out on the water in a yacht is not only exhilarating but gives you ultimate freedom where you are at one with the elements.  Sailing provides an ideal environment in which to learn new skills, make new friends and realise what you are capable of achieving through adventure.

I hope you will dig deep and help raise money for this special charity as when we have our health we take so much for granted and often forget how lucky we are.
