In Sri Lanka the Rosie May Memorial Fund has built the Rosie May Home which provides 20 orphaned girls with a safe and caring environment in which they have access to education and opportunities otherwise unavailable to them. I took the opportunity to visit the Rosie May Home in December 2009 it was an amazing feeling to see it up and running and to meet the orphans who seemed so happy and well cared for.

The design and vision of the Rosie May Home is to provide twenty orphaned girls with a family orientated environment in which a strong and loving foundation can be supplied. All expenses for the Home are currently paid for by the Fund and funds raised would be used to support, facilitate and maintain its existence. The girls’ food, medical and dentistry expenses, clothing and educational programmes and live-in orphanage staff salaries would benefit from the fundraising, especially as the girls continue have opportunities to embrace other activities and skills. The Rosie May Home uniquely gives these tsunami orphans a chance to thrive with a bright outlook for their futures.

I couldn't see what was wrong with that at the time until I witnessed how life could end so quickly. In her 10 years of life Rosie May had achieved so much and in comparison I felt there was more to life than what I was doing.

The first fund raising run I completed was the Lincoln 10k in 2007 and at the time this seemed like a huge distance to me. I was determined to succeed so I gave up smoking and began to eat more healthily and cut back on partying. I found this incredibly hard but felt such a sense of achievement that I wanted to do it again. This was a turning point for me and I have recently completed my fourth half marathon. Doubling the distance seems impossible right now but I know with your support and my will power I will do it and together we can make a difference giving these girls a better life.
