On 30th July 2011, Jane and Pete are attempting the Yorskhire Three Peaks Challenge in aid of The Paul Strickland Scanner Centre. The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge takes in the peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, usually in this order. These peaks form part of the Pennine range, and encircle the head of the valley of the River Ribble, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The aim is to complete a gruelling 37.5 km (23.3 mi) to 42 km (26.1 mi) circuit of all three peaks with nearly 1,600 m (5,249 ft) of ascent and descent within 12 hours. We opted for this over the national three peaks challenge (Ben Nevis, Snowdon and Scafell Pike) because we thought that looked too easy. We are very much prepared for the challenge: having lived in Yorkshire means that we are accustomed to big gradients and turbulent weather, and extensive research (all via google) has assured us that this task is do-able for the able walker.
The Paul Strickland Scanner Centre is a very worthwhile cause which provides Computerised Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET/CT) to the National Health Service and Private Healthcare sector in the United Kingdom. In 2005 Jane’s dad managed to raise £33,111.62 for the charity
