Story
On the 12th of June I will be jumping into the murky waters of New York
to swim the 28.5 miles (in a standard swimming costume) around
Manhattan Island in aid of Headway, the brain injuries charity.
We start from battery park, swim under the Brooklyn Bridge and through Harlem (which is manky) then down the Hudson and eventually arriving back at Battery Park!
En route i will be swimming past 10 blocks of sewage which should be a treat but, having trained in Manchester ship canal and Albert Dock in Liverpool, it's nothing that i'm not used to!
I am swimming in aid of Headway, the brain injuries charity because of the support they have given to my brother and my family over the past 7 years.
Seven years ago, my younger brother, Sean, went to the assistance of someone who was being attacked. The atackers (a father and son) then turned on my brother, punched him in the windpipe which rendered him unconcious and then started to jump on and kick his poor head. As a result, he spent several months in a coma and was left severely brain damaged.
He was 19 at the time and looking forward to going to study design, have a successful career and raise a family of his own but instead, his life was changed in those few minutes and he now requires 24 hour care.
Sadly, incidents like what happened to my brother happen all too frequently and so Headway do an invaluable job of helping the victims of brain injuries and their families come to terms with all the problems and issues that come with an acquired brain injury.
At the moment I'm averaging 60km - 70km a week in the water (10 times a week with a further 4 gym sessions) and cant wait to dive in on the 12th of June and get started I really appreciate all the suport and encouragement that I have already recieved for this and other swims and any further support and motivation you could give me on the lead up would be fantastic.
Thank you,
Jane
