Story
As you will have seen, on Friday the 11th March, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake, the sixth largest ever recorded, struck the east coast of Japan followed by a 10 metre-high tsunami.
The death toll currently stands at 12,300 with 15,000 more unaccounted for and entire communities wiped out. There is a limited supply of food, water and power in the affected area, as well as an ongoing threat of nuclear radiation leakage.
Within Wapping, London, there is a small Japanese community and we have decided to help in our own small way. Hence we have put the Japanese mums of Wapping into action to prepare some home cooked Japanese food and children's events for a Japanese Charity Day to be hosted on the 10th April. Since starting to plan this event, we have been overwhelmed by the support we have received from all we have spoken to.
The plan is to hold a small family day in Wapping Gardens (please see the map in the photo section) with a selection of Japanese foods, a raffle, jumble sale and children's activities. There will also be a short Japanese performance.
Please come along and enjoy the day with us. The aim is to raise one thousand pounds to be given to the British Red Cross Japan Tsunami appeal. Please follow our site on facebook for more details of the day.
