What - Climbing Kilimanjaro - the highest mountain in Africa
When - 23rd January to 2nd February 2010
Why - Madness ...
Many people have asked why "I" (not the most likely candidate) have decided to climb up to 5892m. The honest answer is I don't know. Yes the decision was made shortly after the fantastic comic relief trek - not that I actually managed to see the TV programme. It did get me thinking about whether I could do it and the simple thought was that I have youth on my side, but most of all ... i see this as the most fantastic once in a lifetime experience. Whether I make it to the top or not (correct that - WHEN I get to the top), I will have the most amazing memories to look back on for the rest of my life. Truthfully, it would have probably have stayed a dream if it wasn't for the conincidental invite from Jen. The fact that this invite came within days of my thinking what an acheivement it would be to climb Kilimanjaro I saw as "fate". I know that we as a group will provide great support to one another, and the chance to do this with two close friends will only make our friendship more special, but also the new friends I will make within the group and fantastic porters and guides who help us to reach the top.
As for the charity, I thought long and hard trying to come up with a linked charity which I don't already support. I asked a number of people and the most common answer was children's charities, british charities so Barnardos it is. Although this is a personal challenge and acheivement for me, and I didn't want to put the pressure of the charity being the reason for the climb, I do think that events like this should be used to give something back to others in return for the memories I will receive. Besides, as I have already implied ... there are several people who do not think I will make it to 500m let alone 5892m (that's you Dad). I am not in peak physical fitness (although I reckon better than Chris Moyles), and that in itself I think deserves a couple of your pennies in recognition.
Once again, thank you in anticipation of your donation and I look forward to thrilling you with my photos when I get back.
