The Challenge: To run my first marathon (London) at the tender age of 41. I have been training extremely hard through a dark, wet and miserable winter and bounced back from a couple of injuries to earn your most needed donation, no matter how small.
The Charity: The Alliance Conservation Project is a £6.75m project to save HMS Alliance, the last surviving British A-Class WW2 era submarine in Europe and the memorial to 5,300 submariners who have given their lives in service.
A memorial to sacrifice and courage.
HMS Alliance is the only remaining British WW2 era submarine. After a 28 year operational career she became the centrepiece of the RN Submarine Museum at Gosport and the official memorial to submariners who died in the service of their country. But she needs help. Severe corrosion of her outer structure has proved impossible to arrest due to difficulties of access. Without urgent action, Alliance’s future will be one of accelerating decay
After nearly £6m pounds was raised, including a grant of £3.4m from the Heritage Lottery Fund, work started in October 2011. The project will complete this year after several years fundraising and 2 years construction work.
