Mid Sussex Triathlon · 10 June 2012

Rockinghorse is a Brighton-based charity which has been supporting children for over 50 years. It was set up in 1967 by Dr Trevor Mann to improve healthcare services for sick children and babies. The charity fundraises for items for every child's treatment, from toys to life-saving equipment.

Story

I, Jay Legate have until 10th June to learn to ride a bike, improve my swimming technique and generally get my fitness up to the level where I can complete the Mid Sussex Triathlon.

This involves swimming for 400m, cycling for 22.5km and finishing off with a 5km run.

You may or may not be aware that I, as a 26 year old cannot ride a bike. I know, its ridiculous, and has been an issue for me for years, whenever cycling comes up in conversation I have to just nod along or wait until someone I know says "Jay, you can't ride a bike can you?!" Then hilarity ensues.

I've decided its time to do something about this, but without some severe motivation I would ever sort it out and get on a bike. So entering a triathlon was the obvious answer, obviously. It doesn't take much working out but step one is to learn to ride and luckily a parent at the school where I work (Carlton Hill Primary School) has volunteered to teach me.

So every Wednesday for the foreseeable "Bike It" Ben will be teaching me the principles of cycling, with the addition help of the pupils in my year 6 class who will either be setting me an example, or learning with me. This reflects one of the many strands of my plan, to show the kids its never too late to take on a new challenge and to understand however embarrassed you might feel, it really doesn't matter what people think.

Throughout my journey I will be keeping a video diary and uploading my progress to the website of my Saturday sports show 'SportsMission'(www.sportsmission.co.uk). Every Saturday I host a three hour sports show on Coastway Hospital Radio in Brighton with Joseph Gunn and Tim Embleton who will be helping me complete my goals.

Its through Coastway that I found Rockinghorse for whom I will be raising money. The Hospital Radio station is part of the Royal Sussex County Hospital and Rockinghorse work closely with The Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital and do amazing work providing support for children in a wide range of unfortunate circumstances.

I know I've gone on a bit but this is a fantastic cause and if you know me, you'll understand how difficult its going to be for me to even finish the race in June, let alone get a good time. But you don't have to take my word for it, I'll be updating my video diary entries as I go along so you can track how my questionable performance is going. So please give whatever you can, it'll make a difference to people who really need it.
