Thanks for taking the time to visit ourJustGiving page.
We are a group of final year Civil Engineering students from Newcastle and will be using our expertise in designing and building a gravity feed water system for rural communities in Borneo. We will be designing the system in Newcastle before Christmas and then in March we will be travelling to a rural village in Sabah, Borneo to build our design. The aim of the project is to improve their access to clean water and in turn help to eliminate diseases, such as typhoid, that are associated with drinking polluted water. The project will involve locating a suitable water source and building a simple dam. Pipes will then be laid to reservoir tanks and afterwards to the village itself. The system is relatively simple and the local people will be educated on how it works and maintenance requirements to ensure a sustainable and worthwhile solution.
In order to complete this challenge we will all need to fundraise an individual target of £2200 in a short space of time. We have been doing a variety of fundraising inititiatives, cakes and hotdogs have been sold on campus to cure the morning munchies, sponsered events have been conducted, ceildhs and quiz nights are being held all of which will lead to the the students having the opportunity of a life time.
