October 13th is World Sight Day, and to mark this day I (along with some friends) will be taking part in the World Sight Day Challenge by spending the day (24hrs) living in the dark, as we will be wearing blacked out glasses to simulate the vision (or really lack of vision) of an individual with total blindness. Through out the day we will be relying on friends and the public to help me navigate around Aston University campus, as we will be attending lectures, studying and even attending a pub quiz ... all completely blind! It is going to be a real eye opener to us (and hopefully many others) about the challenges that people with vision loss face on a daily basis!
The World Sight Day Challenge is an international fundraising campaign that in the UK is run jointly by Optometry Giving Sight and Vision Aid Overseas. The Challenge is designed to raise awareness of the 670million people in developing countries who are blind or visually impaired simply because they do not have access to even the most basic vision care. Through this challenge I hope to raise money for these charities so that they can help provide these people with a sustainable eye care system.
All it takes is £2.50 to be able to provide a child with an eye examination and spectacles, so please dig deep and support this fantastic cause by donating today!
