My story

MOUNT KILIMANJARO

Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest Mountain in Africa, is located in northern Tanzania in the Mount Kilimanjaro National Park. It is an extinct volcanic mountain and standing at a height of 5895m, it is the tallest free standing mountain in the world. There are several routes by which to climb Mt Kilimanjaro, namely: Marangu, Rongai, Lemosho, Shira, Umbwe and Machame. Of all the routes, Machame is by far the most scenic but also the steepest route up the mountain. We are attempting the Machame route and our 7 days of climbing will take us through mountain forests and moorland at the base of the mountain to glaciers and ice fields at the summit. Our trek also has an extra camp day built in to help us acclimatize and to improve our chances of making the top!

We have taken on this challenge to raise money for Mesothelioma UK and also to heighten awareness of Mesothelioma and the dangers of asbestos exposure. In December 2007 our Dad, Mike, was diagnosed with Mesothelioma. He underwent 3 different courses of chemotherapy in the following months but in November 2008 he died. Mesothelioma UK provided both him and us with information and support during this very difficult time. Now we want to complete this challenge in his memory and help this fantastic cause.

We are fully covering the costs of the trip ourselves so every penny we raise goes straight to the work of Mesothelioma UK

If you would like to sponsor us on our trek, please donate via the site. If you can gift aid your donation please do so.

Thank you so much in advance of your support. We look forward to bringing you photos and tales from our trip!
