Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page, yes I am probably mad but to keep my spare tyres in check this summer I have foolishy / generously signed up to Cycle from Lands End to John O' Groats in the Deloitte Ride Across Britain.. Fortunately for me all  of the 'Elite' athletes working for Vodafone beat me to the places for the full ride (Phew!) So.. Instead I am going to ride stage 4 of the journey.

This stage will take me from Ludlow to Haydock... a whole 106 miles which for a chubby unfit ex smoker is no mean feet!

Anyway, enough about me.. the real reason I am doing this is to raise funds for the Vodafone Foundation Lesotho Challenge which this year are aiming to raise  £250,000.00 towards helping support 41,000 children living with HIV/AIDS in Lesotho.

For more information about Lesotho keep reading.................!

Lesotho has one of the world’s highest rates of HIV/AIDS. 23% ofthe two million population are HIV positive (HIV+). Tragically of the estimated 41,000 children in Lesotho living with HIV/AIDS, only 4,000 are on antiretroviral treatment (ARVs). One of the biggest barriers to children accessing treatment is the cost and availability of transport to get to medical facilities where ARVs are administered.

The Vodafone Foundation and Vodacom Lesotho, in partnership with the Ministry of Health and various in country and international partners, are taking the Vodafone M-Pesa ‘text to treatment’ model currently used in Tanzania for maternal health programmes, to Lesotho. Using the mobile money payment system, the programme will look to ensure that all 41,000 children living with HIV/AIDS can access treatment by supporting their travel costs to clinics. The programme also aims to increase the number of women accessing prevention of mother to child transmission (PMTCT) programmes which prevents transmission from HIV+ mothers to their new-born children. The programme will also provide mobile clinics that reach mothers and children in the rural communities where they live – for many communities this will be the first time that this primary health care provision has existed.

About Moyo Lesotho

Launched in February 2014, ‘Moyo Lesotho’ is the second global fundraiser launched by Vodafone and the Vodafone Foundation. Through Moyo Lesotho we aim to raise in excess of US$ 8 million. This is the estimated fund required to mobilise the access and provision of ARVs to all 41,000 children living with HIV/ AIDS in Lesotho. The programme will help a generation of young people access treatment at a cost equivalent to US$65 per child per year over three years of the programme.
