Some of you may know that I am running the London Marathon 2012 to raise money for the charity 'NRAS.' ( I am the only marathon runner raising money for this charity!) NRAS is one which needs awareness and a great deal of funding to help Rheumatoid arthritis sufferers. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, progressive and disabling disease, affecting 580,000 people in England, which suggests that over 690,000 adults in the UK live with the condition.  It is an extremely painful condition and can cause severe disability in sufferers. The disease is a systemic disease which means that it can affect the whole body and internal organs, such as the lungs, heart and eyes. Just after I was born, my mum was diagnosed with the aggressive form of RA. This is not just a disease that affects elderly people - it can affect young children as well as young adults. My mum was very young and physically fit when she became ill and since her diagnosis, she has has to adapt her life to cater for her physical disabilities.   My mum is the strongest, most positive and inspirational person I have ever met. Having seen my mum in intense pain throughout her life, I know how determined she is to live an able and ‘normal’ life. She has never moaned, has spent months in and out of hospital and is constantly trying to control her RA on a daily basis. My cousin - Martin Lee, <a href="http://www.martinkayaking.co.uk/">http://www.martinkayaking.co.uk/</a> has trained as a consultant in Rheumatology and is embarking on a huge fundraising adventure. He will be kayaking 100 marathons in 100 days, around the British Isles to raise money for this same charity. Any monies I raise will add to his donations and together, we are actively helping to support NRAS. The NRAS charity needs donations to help fund the costs of expensive treatments for sufferers and to research more into controlling the disease and how to prevent early mortality.
