Age Concern is the UK's largest organisation working for and with older people. In England, we are a federation of over 400 charities working together to promote the well-being of all older people. Age Concern's work ranges from providing vital local services to influencing public opinion and government. Every day we are in touch with thousands of older people from all kinds of backgrounds - enabling them to make more of life.

On 1 April 2009, Age Concern England and Help the Aged joined together to create a new charity dedicated to improving the lives of older people.

Operating under the name ‘Age Concern and Help the Aged’, we speak with one voice on behalf of all older people.

My story

On Sunday 20^th September, I will be attempting my first ever Half Marathon – The Great North Run! Having watched from the sidelines for years it’s time to finally don the trainers and attempt the challenging 13 mile course in memory of my Nan who passed away last year. Training began in earnest some months ago with Georgina through the streets of Leeds in the freezing cold and wet but it’s paid off and I’m now hopefully ready for the challenge.

I am running on behalf of the newly merged Age Concern and Help the Aged charity. Their mission is to promote the well-being of all older people and to help make later life a fulfilling and enjoyable experience. Just to give you an idea of how the money is spent;

· £1,000 provides emergency heaters, fuel vouchers, blankets and food parcels for 400 older people at risk

· £100 provides help to five housebound or isolated pensioners who desperately need benefits but don’t know how to claim them

· £50 provides an emergency heater

· £20 provides 20 personal visits to older people in their homes

· £10 provides a winter clothes pack

· £5 provides an extra warm blanket for the winter months

Donating through JustGiving is simple and secure, the money is sent directly to the charity. Please can you remember to GiftAid your donation if you are a UK taxpayer as this means the charity receives an extra 28p for each £1 donated.
