The Artemis Great Kindrochit Quadrathlon · 13 July 2013

Mary’s Meals is a global movement that sets up school feeding programmes in communities where poverty and hunger prevent children from gaining an education. The charity now feeds more than three million children every school day and it costs just £19.15/€22.00 to feed a child for a year.

Story

On Saturday 13 July Gerald (Mark Tremlett) and I are participating in the Artemis Great Kindrochit Quadrathlon in order to help raise money for a very important charitiy.

In all the challenge will involve over 10 to 15 hours of constant physical effort. It is a test of physical and psychological stamina, navigation skills and, of course, teamwork.
We have been doing some serious training and will be pushing ourselves to the limit over a course of at least 58 miles:

  • An early morning swim, 1 mile across the Loch will take us to the North shore.
  • Shedding our bathing caps, we will run and walk 16 miles over some 7 Munros (Scottish Hills over 1000m high) which go to make up the Lawers and Ptarmigan ridges. The highest, Ben Lawers (trans. ‘Hill of The Loud Stream’) at 1214m is 1000m above Loch height. In all we will climb over 2500m (assuming we don’t get lost!).
  • Returning to the Loch at Morenish we will Kayak 7 miles back to Ardtalnaig via the enigmatically named "Bikini Beach".
  • Swapping paddles for handlebars, we then cycle clockwise around Loch Tay for 34 miles. The participants’ briefing advises that lights are compulsory and that we are to pay attention to the steep hills, stray sheep and narrow roads on the south side of the Loch!

We are attempting to raise as much money for MARY'S MEALS

The Mary’s Meals story was born in 2002 when Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow visited Malawi during the famine and met a mother dying from AIDS - when he asked her eldest son what his dreams were in life, he replied 'To have enough food to eat and to go to school one day'.
The 2012 Quadrathlon funding to Mary's Meals will continue to fund the feeding programmes at six schools in Malawi that began with 2011 Quadrathlon funding. Where Mary's Meals is provided, there is a rise in enrolment, attendance and academic performance. Buying locally produced food supports the local economy. Volunteers cook and serve Mary's Meals to the children, keeping costs low and giving a strong sense of community ownership. For more information:   www.marysmeals.org.uk
