Story
This year I am entering into the Credit Suisse Banger Rally for Parkinson’s UK. Some of you may or may not know of the event, but a brief overview is that you are challenged to buy a banger for £500 and drive it a considerable distance while completing challenges on the way.
The challenge is to drive from London > Luxembourg > Paris, over 2 days…The vehicle I chose for the event is a 1976 Landrover Series 3
To put this challenge into context I will throw around some numbers..
· 2 Tonnes – the weight of the vehicle
· 120 decibels – The noise level in the cab at motorway cruising speeds
· 0 – Number of driver aids (No power steering, No brake servos, No radio)
· 4 – Drum brakes per wheel, its stops……just
· 50mph – Top speed…if your ears can take the strain
· 700 miles – The total distance to cover
To help share the driving duties I am joined in the team by 3 colleagues from our Zurich office:
· Thomas Erdman
· Gery Zollinger
· Michael Kriener
To further complicate matters none of the above will have been able to drive the car prior to the event, it’ll be a whole new experience.
This year, the beneficiaries of our foolishness will be Parkinson’s UK.
Parkinson’s is a progressive and fluctuating neurological condition, it occurs when 80% of the dopamine producing cells are lost from the part of the brain that controls movement.
This loss of dopamine is unknown,
