SO WHY THE LIFEBOATS?
The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. They provide a 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue service around the coasts of the UK and RoI, as well as a seasonal lifeguard service on many of the busiest beaches in England and Wales.
The RNLI provides an essential public service and receives no support from the government:
- 2013: Launches - 8,304; People Rescued - 8,384; Lives Saved - 325
- Fact: Tower Lifeboat station on the Thames is the busiest station in the RNLI
- RNLI Lifeguards responded to 19,594 incidents and helped 23,505 people
