Royal Parks Half Marathon 2009 · 11 October 2009 ·

Our vision is a world where people with Tourette Syndrome (TS) get the practical support and social acceptance they need to live their lives to the full. We aid their inclusion in education, work, and society throughout their lives, and support research and aim to raise awareness.

Story

I will be running the Royal Parks Half Marathon on the 11th October 2009 to raise money for Tourettes Action. Tourettes Syndrome is an inherited neurological condition. It affects one schoolchild in every hundred and more than 300,000 children and adults in the UK. The key feature is tics, involuntary and uncontrollable sounds and movements. It is a much misunderstood condition which can affect every aspect of a sufferers life (including their ability to take part in normal social, educational and work life). Tourettes Action are the only charity fighting for research and support for its sufferers.

Your support would help to raise vital money for scientific reasearch as well as their helpdesk and information functions. It would also help to support their events where they teach skills to manage aspects of the condition and socialise with peers, helping sufferers to feel less isolated.

A half marathon is 13.1 miles (21k), given I've never run more than 5/6k before and only have 8 weeks to train this is going to be quite a challenge! My target is to raise £400, my work will match whatever I raise meaning everyone's contribution will effectively be doubled. Any support you can lend, no matter how small, will make a difference - don't put it off!

Many thanks,

Tess/ Jess
