Every two hours, someone in the UK will become paralysed. Globally, it is estimated that 15.4 million people are living with paralysis. At Spinal Research our vision is to create a world where paralysis can be cured, no matter when the injury occurred or where in the world.

Story

WELCOME TO JHONTI'S PAGE JUSTGIVING PAGE.

As some of you may know, on the 20th February 2006 I had a pretty bad skiing accident in which I suffered a blow-out fracture to one of my spinal vertebrae. (Lumbar 1 for you medics out there.)

The break was quite severe and I needed to have emergency surgery, which included grafting bone from the hip to replace the sections of vertebrae that had become completely separated from the spine. I spent most of the next two weeks on morphine and it wasn’t until a few weeks later that it was explained to me just how restricted the spinal cord had become. In short I was millimetres away from being paralysed from the waist down and very lucky to walk away with no real long-term damage at all.

Thousands are not so lucky. Every year 800 people on average in the UK are told they will never walk again because of a spinal injury. Many of these are sporting or motor accidents to individuals below the age of 30 having a devastating, life-changing and permanent effect on them and their families.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Spinal Research is a charity which funds research into spinal rehabilitation with a vision to creating: “a world free of the permanence of paralysis caused by spinal cord injury.”

Spinal Research has raised over £27 million since its foundation in 1981 and has supported major breakthroughs in inhibiting scar damage and nerve regeneration research.

The charity does not, however, receive any government funding and relies primarily on kind donations from individuals such as you.

I am proud to be running for such an important charity and would be grateful for any support you are able to provide.

I HOPE YOU HAD A REALLY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAVE AN AMAZING NEW YEAR!

Jhonti.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure.
