We offer local support services to people with mental health problems

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

You can read my blog at jimclipperclarke.wordpress.com and see how the training and the voyage are progressing.

“My wife, Vi and our four grown up kids think I should have been put out to grass after spending the best part of 30 years working in Barclays IT environment. But I wanted to support a local charity and chose Stockport Mind as my younger brother, Paul, tragically committed suicide in 1997. Mental health issues don’t get the exposure they deserve, so this is my effort to support the marvellous work carried out by Mind."

Starting at the Cape of Good Hope, this is where the Southern Ocean provides some of the most extreme sailing in the world.

If the cloud is thick, night sailing happens in inky blackness with just the compass, the GPS and the radar to help. It’ll be chilly, too, because although it will be a southern hemisphere spring, the wind might be coming straight up from the ice of Antarctica.

Leaving the lonely and remote Kerguelen Islands to starboard, the combination of strong winds and large ocean swells that are bigger than buildings, will keep our crew on their toes. So, too, will the chance of vicious in-coming low pressure systems that can bring with them intense gale force storms.

The race starts in August and my leg takes place in mid-October which gives me time to complete the necessary training for such a gruelling test.

Jim says because he enjoys a risk and a challenge Sailing from the Cape of Good Hope to Western Australia should certainly provide both!

Jim is self-funding this adventure and ALL sponsorship monies will go to Stockport Mind.

Stockport Mind provide a fantastic service to their local community and are heavily reliant on charitable donations to help continue their work.

The journey will start at South Africa and end in Western Australia - Nicknamed "The Southern Ocean Sleigh Ride".

Stockport Mind are celebrating their 40th year during 2011 - help me ensure they can celebrate their 41st year too make donating to this fantastic cause.
